FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:

Switchable Glass

How does switchable glass work?

Switchable glass, also known as smart glass or privacy glass, is a laminated glass solution that can change from frosted to clear with the flick of a switch. This innovative glass allows for instant privacy while still letting in light.

Using a small electrical current that passes through a special PDLC (Polymer Dispersed Liquid Crystal) film sandwiched between two layers of glass. When electricity is applied, the liquid crystals align, allowing light to pass through and the glass to appear clear. When the electricity is turned off, the crystals scatter light, causing the glass to turn back to frosted.

Do we use stick on film?

We do not use stick on smart film due to the shorter lifespan, its lower clarity and its prone to peel of bubble.

Our switchable panels are laminated between glass for durability and longevity.

What applications can I use Switchable Glass in?

Switchable glass or privacy glass is versatile and can be used in various settings, including corporate offices, residential homes, healthcare facilities, hospitality venues, and educational institutions. It’s ideal for creating privacy on demand in windows, doors, partitions, and even in innovative product displays.

Our switching glass is compatible with a variety of window and door types, including fixed windows, hinged windows and doors, and gas strut windows. These configurations allow for proper wiring and integration of the switchable film.

However, sliding windows and doors, louvres, and awning windows are not suitable for switch glass installations due to limitations in the wiring configuration required for power connectivity. Solid timber doors with glass panels are also unable to accomodate the wiring.

What is the maximum size of a single switchable glass panel?

Each switchable glass panel can be manufactured up to 1820mm x 3500mm. For extended spans, panels can be silicone butt-joined, allowing you to form a continuous switchable glass wall without visible framing.

Where is Switchable Glass manufactured?

We manufacture in-house on the Gold Coast & only use quality materials including our switchable film that is imported from Texas, USA.

What is the warranty on the smart glass & can it be extended?

Polytron Glass Australia provides a 2-year limited warranty on our switchable glass. We offer a 4 year extended warranty that can be purchased. For more infomration, please contact our sales team. Terms and Conditions

What is the lead time?

Smaller orders can generally be manufactured within 10 days whilst larger orders can take up to 4 weeks. If you require a specific time frame, please contact us to discuss this.

Can I order a sample of Switchable Privacy Glass?

Yes, you can order a sample size of 200mm x 300mm. We offer many different variations of samples including annealed glass, low iron glass, coloured glass and double glazing.

Please contact us to discuss the colour/glass type that you would like to order.

Can you silicone butt join 2 panels?

Yes, our switchable glass can be silicone butt joined, however depending on the height and width will determine how many panels can be butt joined togther. Please contact us to discuss further.

Why is there a clear edge around the peremeter of the switchable panel?

The switchable film is set approximately 5mm in from the edge of the glass, providing a protective buffer to prevent bruising or damage during handling and installation. On a single panel, this non-active border is typically concealed within the frame.

What is a busbar?

The busbar is made from copper strips laminated within the glass panel, designed to conduct power to the switchable film. These copper strips are connected to wires that extend out of the panel for connection to a transformer during installation.

The busbar is typically 12mm in width from the edge of the glass and can be positioned on either the entire long or short edge of the panel. For oversized panels, we recommend placing the busbar on the long edge to ensure optimal power distribution and consistent performance across the entire surface.

Does a licensed electrician need to install the switch glass?

Yes, Polytron Switchable glass requires all electrical installations to be completed by a licensed electrician. Please refer to the Electrical Technical Manual.

Is the glass Clear or Frosted when turned on?

When the Switch Glass is turned "ON", it is in its clear state. When the Switch Glass is turned "OFF", it is in its frosted state.

In the event of a power cut, the glass will default to frosted.

How much electricity is required to operate Polytron's Switchable Glass?

Our smart glass operates on a standard voltage 240V/65ac via a transformer.

Does switchable glass have an acoustic rating?

Yes, our standard 9.92mm switchable glass has an RW rating of 35. For additinonal acoustic effect, the panel can be laminated with an acoustic interlayer. Performance is based on the framing used.

Can a window be half switch glass and half not?

Yes. We can laminate switchable film to only part of the window, allowing privacy control on a selected section while the remaining area stays clear. You choose exactly how much of the window switches.

Can Switch Glass be curved?

Yes. With curved glass projects, we require specifications and drawings to be provided. See a previous project here!

Do I need new frames when purchasing Switchable Privacy Glass?

If your exsisting frame can accomodate the switchable glass thickness then you can use the exsisting frame. Please note that switchable glass is generally thicker than a standard glass pane. Check with your builder if you are unsure.

Can Switch glass be double glazed?

Yes. With any external panels that sit in direct sunlight, we strongly recommend incorporating the switchable glass in to a double-glazed unit. Prolonged exposure to harsh UV rays and high temperatures fromt he sun can potentially damage the film.

Double glazing not only provides thermal insulation but also adds a layer of rotection that significantly enhances the durability and longevity of the smart lass. The thickness of a double-glazed switchable glass unit starts from 23.92mm, which includes the switchable panel, an additional Low-E toughened glass panel and a spacer bar between the two.

Do you manufacture laminated glass other than Switch Glass?

Yes, we manufcature trafficable structutal laminated glass, non-structural glass, laminated mirrors as well as switchable glass here on the Gold Coast.

Structural Glass

What is structural laminate?

Structural laminate is a high-strength, multi-layered laminated glass, engineered to support structural loads while also offering safety, transparency, and design flexibility.

Many of our projects incorporate glass pool windows, pool floors, and glass roofing systems as key architectural features. These elements not only enhance the overall design with a clean, contemporary aesthetic but also reflect a commitment to cutting-edge engineering and innovation.

How is structural laminate different from standard laminated glass

While both types use bonded glass layers, structural laminate is specifically designed to withstand structural loads, making it suitable for use in glass, floors, walls, and roofs. Standard laminated glass is more for safety and containment, but not necessarily load-bearing. The SG interlayer film provides the glass's overall strength and durability.

How do I get the panel engineered?

Obtaining engineering approval for a structural panel is essential for both manufacturing and installation. While there are many engineering firms that can provide this service, Polytron can also supply an engineering report if required.

Do you offer custom designs?

Yes, because we manufacture in-house, we offer fully custom designs for both switchable and structural laminated glass. Whether you need curved or shaped panels, holes or cut-outs, or a specific RW rating, our team is here to assist.

What is Polystrong Structural Balustrading?

Our innovative Polystrong structural balustrading systems are engineered with safety and security as top priorities. Designed with a premium exposed-edge finish, they offer a modern aesthetic while providing stunning, uninterrupted views.
